AGT Week 7: Fake Howie flops, mariachi cops score, and a blind singer rises
Week 7 opened in chaos and ended in heart. On the last audition day, the panel—Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Mel B—sat through a prank that went too long, a cop choir that wasn’t a choir, a human ramp, and a country singer who walked out and owned the room.
The night the fake Howie ate it
He walked out with a wink and a dare: Its good to be here. My name is Howard Michael Mandel, he said. Hello. Im 70, and Im from Canada. Then the puns started. For lunch today, I couldnt decide if I wanted a pickle with my sandwich or not. I was like, dill or no dill?
Silence. A judge broke it: My first question is why? The act doubled down, mishearing a line and pinging it back as, How we do it? A few more references to streaming albumsIts on vinyl. And whats the other one? Oh, CDand the room slipped from confused to bored. A judge called it: This is brutal. Another asked, That was not funny. Did anybody laugh? Three red buttons followed. Im saying no, said one. Thats fair. Good night, the comic replied. Backstage he shrugged, I gave it a shot. And they said no pretty quickly.
Minutes later the stage filled with fur jokes. Are you a lion or a cat? a judge asked. I have a cat, came the answer. My name is Cat Williams. He said he lived in New York City in an alley and did stand-up. The lines were all paws and claws: Some people were asking me backstage if I was nervous. Im like, yeah. Just a litter. Then, Im not kidding. Its either meow or never.
He sold a few more: Its just a furball agreement, I was just a copycat, and a running tally, I have eight more lives… Zero. Then came the twist. Wait. I think youre the same guy that came on as Howie, a judge said. No. That guy, hes still over there. This is two different acts, Cat shot back. You have the same shape face, and youre exactly the same height, came the reply. Well, agree to disagree. The panel didnt. Mel. No. No. Im gonna say no. Exit, stage left.
A family band with polish—and a warning
Relief arrived in three-part harmony. Were called The Sound, and were originally from Romeo, Michigan, said Levi, who introduced his brother Jacob and their dad, Ron. Theyre a country band that looks like one: a father on bass, two sons out front. Simon teased Ron: Did you deliberately give yourself the coolest instrument to play, not to your boys? Because every bass player, thats the coolest instrument to have. Dad grinned: Absolutely, it is. And Ive got the hair to prove it.
They sang clean and tight. One judge who admits shes not a country fan confessed, Im not really that big of a fan of country music, but this made me so happy. She called the harmonies perfection. The crowd stood. Another judge said, You guys being a family, I mean, the voices, everything was perfect. I think Americas gonna fall in love with you.
Then Simon slid a note across the table, in public. Being honest, that was obviously a very safe, nice audition. Thats the riskiest thing you can do, he said. If you make it through to the next round, I think you should sing a song which you kinda make into a country song. Going forward, we have to go beyond safe. Moments later came a wave of yeses. Im gonna start this off with your first yes. Sofia? Yes. Simon? Im going to say yes. The family will be back.
Mariachi in uniform
Los Servidores took the stage in matching suits and bigger smiles. We are Los Servidores, their spokesman said, a group of law enforcement that gets together and sings for our community throughout the Southern California area. Panel eyebrows lifted. What followed wasnt a choir. Trumpets cut in, strings danced, and a familiar hook appeared in Spanish lilt.
At first, when you started, I was like, what are they saying? Then I recognized the song, Walking on Sunshine. I like that youve taken a song and made it mariachi. Ive never heard that before.
I loved it. It was amazing for me, Sofia added. I rarely get to hear a mariachi here on the show, so it got me really excited. Another judge read the room: Most importantly, the audience loved this audition. I could tell. When the votes came, it was a sweep. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes, and then, That means you now have four yeses. Congratulations.
Backstage the jokes kept rolling. They first walked out, I thought, oh my god. Where did I park? Onstage, a judge leaned into the theme: Let me tell you, you arrested the audience. Then the TV tag: Murder. Murder and Mariachi. Murder. Tonight at nine. Corny, but the crowd ate it up.
A ramp made of nerve
He said his name was Manram. Im a carpenter, he told them. A real carpenter? Im a real carpenter. Thats right. Yeah. I build things. He left to build us something and returned with a skate crew and a premise: be the thing others ride.
After he did it, he explained. We all met up to skate one day. We had a piece of plywood. We wanted to kill some time. Friends like, just skate over me. Im a ramp. Im a ramp. When you have a human portable ramp, you start to see the landscape very differently.
Judges squinted, then smiled. I thought it was a really good audition, one said. I dont think weve seen this here. Ive never seen a man ramp. Simon found the point: At first, I thought it was comical, but, actually, its very practical. Its like Tony Hawk without any bells or whistles. A yes followed, then more approval. The carpenter who became a prop earned his pass.
Sara from Nashville and a room that stood still
Sara Hardwig walked to center stage with a white cane and a country accent. I am 23 years old, and I live in Nashville, Tennessee, she said. She didnt dodge her backstory. I was born blind. I was diagnosed with a genetic eye condition when I was five months old, and music has always played an important role in my life. Then she laid out her aim in one clean line:
I want to prove to the world that regardless of whether you have a disability or not, you can do absolutely anything that you set your mind to.
She sang Lainey Wilsons Heart Like a Truck, and let the lyric tell her story: Ive never stay in one place too longa stumble, a breaththen, stronger: I got a hankering for four white tires, and I cant help it. Its the way Im wired. When she hit the chorusI got a heart like a truckyou could hear the room pull for her.
Howie framed what happened. That was beautiful and heartwarming, and you are the epitome of resilience to show up here and to sing your heart out and to move three or four thousand strangers in this room and hopefully millions of people at home. He added, I love your message, and I love your energy.
Mel looked at craft. Your trills and the way that you control your voice is on point. But I feel like you could have given us so much more. I think [you] could go with an even bigger song because you can do it. Sofia pushed back: Everything you did was amazing. I wouldnt change a thing. Your voice, the song, I think we all fell in love with you.
Simon threaded the needle. Auditions are our first introduction. However, that was a really, really good audition. I really hope this boosts your confidence because you really, really have a natural gift. Then came the votes. Yes, said Howie. Youre gonna go bigger and better. Its a yes from me. Sofia? Yes. Simon cracked a numbers joke to cap it: Sara, Ive just calculated. Youve got 4,230 assists. However you parse the math, shes through.
Mystery with a live wire named Brooke
Aidan Corcoran, 19, walked in with quiet edges. How are you feeling now? Im feeling good. A bit nervous, but good. Sofia clocked it: You have an air of mystery about you. He smiled and kept it there.
He turned Sofia into a vault. I have something for you. But I dont want anybody here, even you, to know what this is, he said. Its not alive. Youre good. Okay, Sofia. So lock your hands around it. Make sure no one sees. Then he widened the stage to the balcony. Can everyone in the audience think of someone you care about? When you have a name in mind, raise your hand. He stopped on a signal from Howie. In the blue, can we get you a mic? Can you please stand up and tell us your name?
Brooke, she said. Aidan checked the conditions. Brooke, no one in the world could know who youre thinking of. Right? No. He asked her to breathe. The room held one too. Whatever came next, he had set the stakes with a secret in Sofias hands and a strangers memory across the aisle.
That was Week 7: a fake Howie who could not buy a laugh, a feline comic who doubled as a suspect, a country family finding a lane, officers turning a pop classic into a plaza, a carpenter who became a tool, a young singer from Nashville earning four nods, and a teen mentalist who built a cliff and asked us to lean over it.
The season moves on from here. Simons dare to go beyond safe hangs over everyone who earned a yes. The next round will test whether The Sound can flip a non-country hit, whether Los Servidores can surprise twice, and whether Sara chooses a bigger song. Watch the full auditions to catch the beats between the quotesthe long holds, the smile before a reveal, the jokes that die and the ones that stick.
